Love is in the pond: Croc couple ‘Romeo-Juliet’ lays 52 eggs
Crocodile Juliet has laid 52 eggs at the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in the Chandpai Range of the Eastern Sundarbans on Friday morning.
Juliet laid eggs beside the pond of the breeding centre, Azad Kabir, in-charge of Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in Sundarbans, said, reports Daily Star.
“Of the eggs, 14 were kept in Juliet’s own cage, 26 in the old incubator and 12 in a new incubator,” he said, hoping the eggs will hatch in 85 to 90 days.
He said this time they are using natural methods and expecting a good outcome.
Mentionable, on May 9, 2019, Juliet had laid 44 eggs.
The Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre started its journey in 2000 — the crocodiles started laying eggs there from 2005. So far, 292 crocodile offspring have been born in Karamjal at different times, Azad said.
Of these, 195 cubs are still in the cage, while 97 cubs have been released in various rivers and canals of the Sundarbans, added the official.
