Bangladesh ahead of US-India-Pakistan in Global Peace Index

Bangladesh has moved four notches in the World Peace Index-2020 published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international research institute based in Australia. With a GPI score of 2.121, Bangladesh ranks 97th out of 163 countries in the world. In 2019, Bangladesh was 101st in this index.

Bangladesh has improved the most in South Asia in the peace index last year. In the overall score, Bangladesh has improved by 2.3 percent. Which is the highest in South Asia. Bangladesh has improved in all three domains of indexing. Especially in safety and security.

Moreover, the violent activities of the opposition parties have also decreased, the report said. The working environment of the country’s garment industry has improved. Inter-conflict death has also decreased. Terrorist activities have also decreased. Which has accelerated the development of Bangladesh in the index.

Bangladesh ranks fourth in South Asia in the index. Bhutan is at the top as usual. Nepal and Sri Lanka are in second and third place. India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are in fifth, sixth, and seventh place among the countries in the region.

Bhutan is ranked 19th with a score of 1.501 in the Global Peace Index (GPI) as the fifth country outside Europe to make it into the top 20 of the index.

Nepal is in the 63rd position (score – 1.974). Sri Lanka is in the 77th position. India ranks 139th. Pakistan is in the 152nd position. And Afghanistan is in 163rd place.

As usual, Iceland is at the top of the world peace index. The country has held the top spot since 2006. In the second place is New Zealand, Portugal is third. Austria is fourth, Denmark is fifth, Canada is sixth, Singapore is seventh, the Czech Republic is eighth, Japan is ninth and Switzerland is tenth place.

The index is based on information on the security and safety of citizens living peacefully, economic values, trends, and steps taken by countries to build a peaceful society.
