The country has recorded the highest coronavirus (Covid-19) daily death toll and cases tally in the last 24 hours, with 21 new deaths and 1,602 fresh cases.
With the latest figures, the country’s Covid-19 death toll has risen to 349. The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases on Monday surpassed the 23,000-mark, climbing to 23,870 with the additional cases.
Previously, Bangladesh recorded the highest single day cases (1,273) from the coronavirus infection on May 17 and highest single day deaths (19) on May 13.
Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Monday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She said as many as 9,788 samples were tested in 42 labs across the country in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of tests conducted so far to 185,196.
On May 16, deaths from coronavirus infection crossed the 300 mark in Bangladesh while the country recorded its first fatality on March 18.
In the briefing, Prof Nasima also said that 212 more Covid-19 patients have recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours.
As per the revised guidelines provided by the Clinical Management Committee of the health authorities, 4,585 people so far have won the fight against coronavirus.
On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2. The virus broke out in China’s Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 316,754 lives and infected 4,806,297 people across the world till Monday afternoon according to Worldometer.
As many as 1,860,333 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
