National Mourning Day observed around the country

National Mourning Day and the 45th Martyrdom Day of Father of the Nation have been observed all over the country with due respect and dignity through various programs including Dua Mahfil (prayers), feasts for poor people, discussions on the life and philosophy of Bangabandhu, and various competitions for children around the country. Our district correspondents have reported the following events held on the occasion.

CHUADANGA

On the occasion of the National Mourning Day, wreath-laying, observing silence, dua mahfil was held at Chuadanga at the portrait of Bangabandhu-Bangamata at the deputy commissioner’s office premises on Saturday morning.

Wreaths were laid at the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa at 7 am on Saturday. Later, a one-minute silence was observed. In the end, a prayer was held seeking forgiveness of all departed souls of the Bangabandhu family.

Deputy commissioner Nazrul Islam Sarkar, assistant superintendent of police Abu Russell, district Awami League joint general secretary Reazul Islam Joarddar Toton, district Jubo League convener Naeem Hasan Joarddar and others were present on the occasion.

NETROKONA

The 45th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been observed in Netrokona through various programmes by various organisations including the district administration and the Awami League.

State minister for Social Welfare Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, member of parliament Habiba Rahman Khan Shefali, the district administration, police administration, district council, Netrokona municipality, Sadar Upazila Parishad, Awami League and various allied organisations, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Sheikh Hasina University, Press Club, Red Crescent Society, Udichi, Shatadal and various educational institutions and socio-cultural organisations laid wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation on the open stage of the district town.

A discussion meeting was held at the local public hall at 10 am. Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru was present as the chief guest.

With the deputy commissioner Kazi Md Abdur Rahman in the chair, Habiba Rahman Khan Shefali, district council chairman Prashant Kumar Roy, superintendent of police Akbar Ali Munshi, Netrokona Municipality mayor Nazrul Islam Khan, former freedom fighter commander Nurul Amin, Red Crescent secretary Hossain Gazi Mozammel Hossain Tuku spoke on the occasion.

KHULNA

The day was observed in Khulna with due dignity and solemnity. The day’s programme began with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous institutions, educational institutions and private buildings as soon as the sun rose on Saturday.

Mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukdar Abdul Khaleq, divisional commissioner Dr Md Anwar Hossain Hawladar, Khulna Metropolitan Police commissioner Khandaker Lutful Kabir, deputy inspector general GK Mohid Uddin, deputy commissioner Mohammad Helal Hossain, superintendent of police SM Shafiullah, chairman of the District Council Sheikh Harunur Rashid, district and metropolitan freedom fighters’ commanders, members of metropolitan and district Awami League and its affiliates, and people from various quarters paid homage at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangladesh Betar premises at 8 am on Saturday.

In the morning, at the initiative of the Khulna district administration, a discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office highlighting the significance of the day through zoom app. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Helal Hossain presided over the function.

Later, prizes were distributed among the winners of the Children’s Academy Painting and Poetry Recitation Competition and loans from the Department of Youth Development were provided.

A brief discussion meeting, tree planting and prayer mahfil were held on the occasion of National Mourning Day on the initiative of Khulna City Corporation. City mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleq was the chief guest on the occasion.

In the morning, the mayor laid a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation at Nagar Bhavan. Besides, a discussion meeting was held on the occasion of National Mourning Day at the initiative of Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Khulna Agricultural University, Khulna Press Club, Khulna Journalists Union.

Dua and Milad mahfil were held in different mosques of the city including Johar Collectorate Jame Mosque, Police Line Jame Mosque, Town Jame Mosque, ensuring social distancing and following hygiene rules. Special prayers were also offered at various temples, churches, pagodas and other religious institutions.

NARSINGDI

National Mourning Day is also being observed in Narsingdi through various programmes. On the occasion, deputy commissioner Syeda Farhana Kaunain and superintendent of police Kumar Joyadar paid homage to Bangabandhu with a bouquet at the initiative of Narsingdi district administration on Saturday morning.

Later, the employees of different departments paid their respects with flowers.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of district Awami League, upazila Awami League, district Juba League, district Chhatra League and other organisations observed the day with various arrangements.

Narsingdi Municipal mayor Kamruzzaman Kamrul organised a public feast for 5,000 people on the occasion of the day of mourning. Madhabdi Municipal mayor Mosharraf Hossain Manik distributed food among the poor.

RANGPUR

The dark day was observed with due dignity in Rangpur in a mournful atmosphere.

Awami League Muktijoddha Sangsad and various professional organisations paid homage at Bangabandhu Chattar in the city. Earlier, mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa, divisional commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud, Rangpur deputy commissioner Asib Ahsan, superintendent of police and other departmental and district department officials paid their respects to Bangabandhu with flowers.

Participating in the programme, political leaders and the younger generation demanded the establishment of Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla as well as the trial of war criminals and the execution of Bangabandhu’s murderers.

TANGAIL

In Tangail, on this occasion of the National Mourning Day, deputy commissioner Md Ataul Gani laid a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Shaheed Smriti Municipal Park on Saturday morning.

Later, Tangail-5 (Sadar) member of parliament Sanowar Hossain and Tangail-2 (Gopalpur- Bhuapur) member of parliament Tanvir Hasan Chhota Monir and superintendent of police Sanjit Kumar Roy laid wreaths.

Various political, social and cultural organisations including district Awami League, district council, Tangail Municipality, Tangail Press Club, and Juba League laid wreaths.

Later, prayers were offered for the forgiveness of the soul of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Deputy commissioner Md Ataul Gani presided over the discussion meeting organised by the district administration at Shilpakala Academy.

Sanowar Hossain inaugurated a public feast at the Shaheed Smriti Municipal Park initiated by the district Awami League. Awami League and its affiliates organised public banquets at more than 800 places in the district.
